Vision: For children of one parent families to have life enhancing experiences of family.
Mission: To provide information and support to one parent families that enable them to make life enriching choices.
Birthright was established in the Hawkes Bay in 1955. Its founder (Peter Gifford with the support of Hastings Jaycees) was inspired by the need to provide support for children in one parent families. They endeavoured to ensure that these children had the same rights and opportunities as other children. They believed every child had that 'birthright' regardless of race, belief and social status.
Orginally, in addition to the emotional support given by Birthright volunteers and family visitors, practical material support was also given, such as firewood, clothing and holidays for the children.
Birthright Waikato was established in 1958
In 1988 a review of Birthright and its services was undertaken and it was recognised that the social structure of New Zealand had changed markedly. The organisation needed to change to meet the changing needs of one parent families.
The mission statement "Personally Satisfying Lives for One Parent Families" and with that a change in philosophy was undertaken.
Families are now encouraged to identify and develop their strengths and sense of thenselves by acknowledging their own futures.
Birthright Waikato works alongside families offering information and support so that they can be more resourceful and enhance their lives.
Structure: Birthright is a national organisation with 16 member societies. All member societies operate autonomously and provide services that are unique to their community. Each member society has its own Executive Committee to make strategic decisions.
